The thing we liked most was following Mamma everywhere finding food to eat. At the head of Hugh Low street near to the Tg Rambutan bus station, there was
a Indian Mamak shop, when Mamma chirped,
‘Let’s go for the fresh milk!’ We
jumped for joy. As we entered the
shop, we ordered fresh milk only, hot milk
served in a tall glass,
Mamma would put a small teaspoon of sugar
in and stirred well, then poured out the fresh milk
into two small coffee dishes for my brother and I,
with a small porcelain
spoon we scooped the fresh milk into our
mouth, when the milk cool down a bit a thin film would form on top of the milk,
according to Mamma this is the essence of the milk, it tasted good
too. Sometimes, Mamma would order a ‘Mutabat’,
an Indian pancake
Roti Canai mixed with egg and minced meat and onion fried in the big
round pan, cut into small square pieces and served,
Mamma and her two children filled the stomach and went home
without taking supper anymore!
